AvAI Privacy Policy
Operated by Rocky Mountain Digerati, LLC · Last updated June 28, 2026 · Effective June 28, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Rocky Mountain Digerati, LLC ("RMDig", "we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and shares information in connection with AvAI, a backcountry safety companion service consisting of the AvAI mobile app and its backend servers. It applies to AvAI users ("Account Holders") and to the people they designate to receive safety alerts ("Check-In Partners"). For how our SMS program works, see our Messaging Terms & Conditions.
1. Information we collect
- Account and device data. A device identifier and account linkage used to authenticate the app to our servers. We do not require a name or email to create an account.
- Check-In Partner contact details. The name and mobile phone number (and, optionally, email) of the people an Account Holder designates as Check-In Partners. This information is provided by the Account Holder.
- Outing and check-in data. When you check out for an outing: your planned return time, an optional free-text note, and, if you enable location sharing, your last known coordinates.
- Message metadata. Records of the safety messages we send and their delivery status as reported by our messaging provider.
- Technical and diagnostic data. Limited app and server logs, and crash reports if enabled. Crash reports are scrubbed of personal details before they leave the device.
2. How we use information
- To deliver the core safety function: alerting a Check-In Partner by SMS (and, where available, email) when an Account Holder is overdue or triggers "Send Help".
- To include, in an alert, the Account Holder's last known location and a relevant search-and-rescue contact number when one is known, so a Check-In Partner can act.
- To confirm a Check-In Partner's consent and availability.
- To operate, secure, debug, and improve the service.
- To comply with legal obligations.
3. SMS / text-messaging consent
Check-In Partners opt in to SMS by replying YES to an AvAI request, and may opt out at any time by replying STOP. Message and data rates may apply. See the Messaging Terms & Conditions for details.
4. How we share information
We share information only as needed to run AvAI:
- Messaging and communications providers. We use Twilio to send SMS and an email provider to send email. To deliver an alert, we share the recipient's phone number (or email) and the message content, which may include the Account Holder's first name, last known coordinates, and a search-and-rescue contact number.
- Recipients of alerts. By design, a Check-In Partner receives the safety information described above so they can help.
- Emergency context. AvAI does not contact emergency services for you. Our messages may direct a Check-In Partner to call 911 or a local search-and-rescue team.
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or property of any person.
- No sale. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for third-party marketing.
5. Location data
Location sharing is optional and controlled by the Account Holder's device permissions. When enabled, a last known location is collected so it can be included in a safety alert. You can disable location sharing in your device settings at any time.
6. Data retention
We retain outing, contact, and message records for as long as needed to provide the service and to meet legal, security, and operational requirements, then delete or de-identify them. You may request deletion of your data as described below.
7. Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted transport and access controls. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your choices and rights
- Opt out of SMS: reply STOP to any AvAI message.
- Get help: reply HELP or email [email protected].
- Access or deletion: email [email protected] to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your information, subject to applicable law.
- Check-In Partners: if someone listed you without your consent, reply STOP or contact us to be removed.
9. Children
AvAI is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Beta service
AvAI is currently offered as a beta service. It may be unavailable or unreliable, and should be used as one layer of a broader safety practice, not as your only safety system.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
